Sod Installation In Winnipeg

Make a statement with a lush new lawn. No weed control or fertilizer required.

What Is Sod?

Sod, or “turf” if you’re fancy like the British, is commonly used in residential and commercial applications to transform your landscaping and increase the property value, especially after a yard grading in Winnipeg. When we talk about sod, we’re referring to sections of grass grown and bound together by a root system or some other type of biodegradable material.

You’ve most likely seen sod used on golf courses, recreational fields, and, you guessed it, lawns for homes, schools, and businesses.

Time for a history lesson. John Deere, of John Deere fame, made a huge fortune when he became the first person to make a plow capable of cutting prairie sod on the Great Plains. Now, landscapers (that’s us!) lay sod down on the lawns of homeowners to improve the overall look and aesthetics of your property. There’s nothing more eye-catching than a lush, green lawn.

Benefits of Sod

Utilizing sod doesn’t just start and end with an appealing-looking lawn. Installing sod can provide additional benefits, such as:

  • Quick and easy installation

  • Erosion control and prevention

  • Curb appeal

  • Faster than seeding

  • Keeps the property cool in the heat

  • Enhanced water and air quality

You get an instant return on your investment when you commit to the sodding installation process. As soon as the sod is laid, you’ll have the freshest, newest lawn on the block. Healthy sod also requires less watering and less watering means more savings on your water bill. Say goodbye to that sad, discoloured lawn, and say hello to your new vibrant outdoor paradise.

Our Sodding Process

We don’t want to brag (we’re going to anyway), but we’ve been in the Winnipeg landscape design industry for years. What started with $30 lawn cuts has turned into a business we’re incredibly proud of. But since the days of simple lawn cutting, we’ve had the time to perfect and hone our craft regarding landscaping.

Our sodding process is completed with absolute attention to detail. When replacing an old lawn, we make sure to excavate 7.6-10 cm/3-4 inches before installing 7.6-10 cm/3-4 inches of the freshest topsoil. Why? To ensure that we capture and remove the existing root system. In most cases, root systems are burdened by weeds, debris, and other undesirables.

Next, we establish a well-executed grade and ensure the sod is rolled as tightly as possible with tight seams. Then, we water the sod thoroughly before leaving the job site. There are instances where the ground is ready to receive the soil without any excavation services. If that’s the case, we completely skip the first step and move to the foundation work by setting the grade and maintaining proper water management.

Proper grading and levelling are vital to our operation. Without appropriate water displacement, you could end up with a deformed lawn. Who wants that? Certainly not us!

What Sod Is Best for Winnipeg?

When we say we know sod, we know sod. What’s even better is we know what type of sod is best in Winnipeg. What you think may be the best sod may differ from the lawns three streets over. Your yard might not have any trees for shade and is constantly in the sunlight. If that’s the case, you’ll need hot-tempered grass. See? We know our turf.

The four most popular types of grass in Winnipeg are:

  • Bermuda Grass: No association with the Bermuda triangle. This type of grass is fantastic for hotter climates. Anyone who lives in Winnipeg will tell you that the summer is like living through a drought. This grass will survive the hottest temperatures.

  • Fine Fescue: The finest Fescue in all the land. This grass type does well in cooler climates and has excellent drought tolerance.

  • Kentucky Bluegrass: You’re not the only thing that freezes during the winter. Your lawn does too. But with this grass type, your lawn can withstand the frigid winter months.

  • St. Augustine Grass: Well suited for hotter climates, this type can survive brutal droughts but requires a higher water intake.
